Why I built a coach and a copilot, not just a copilot
Every interview AI helps you during the call and abandons you after it. I wanted the opposite: something that makes you better.
I teach. That is the lens I see this whole category through. For years on KGP Talkie I have watched people go from stuck to hired, and it never happened because someone fed them an answer in the moment. It happened because they practiced until the answer was theirs.
So when I looked at the interview AI tools everyone was building, something felt off. They were all the same shape: a copilot that whispers an answer while the interviewer is still talking. Clever, useful for a nervous moment, and completely silent about the thing that actually matters, which is whether you get better.
A copilot helps the call. A coach helps you.
Here is the problem with a copilot on its own. It optimizes for a single call and leaves you exactly as prepared for the next one as you were for the last. You lean on it, you get through, and three weeks later you are back in the same seat with the same racing heart.
A coach is the opposite bet. It makes the call less scary because you already did the hard version in practice. You have said the answer out loud ten times. You know your weak spot is rambling on system design and you have drilled it. The confidence is real because it is earned.
So I built both, on one growth graph.
SideSense has a Coach side and an Assist side, and they share one thing: a record of how you are actually doing. Coach runs realistic mock interviews, scores your answers, and shows you the patterns, like filler words, talk ratio, and the topics that keep dragging your score down. You drill those until they stop being weak spots.
Assist is the live copilot for the real call, quiet on your side of the screen, drafting from your own resume if you want a nudge. But it is the second half of the story, not the whole thing. The point was never to get you through one interview. It was to make you someone who is good at interviews.
Why it runs on your machine
There is one more reason the coach model matters to me. To practice honestly, you have to feed it your real resume, your real stumbles, your real recordings. I was not going to ask people to upload the most personal parts of their job search to someone else's server. So it all runs locally, offline with Ollama or with your own key. Your data stays yours. That is not a feature line, it is the only way I would use this myself.
Practice like it's real. Perform like a pro.
